Board of Director Nominees’ Brief Biographies

Jeremiah Bentley – 3 Year Term (Incumbent)

I have been a UMassFive member since 2015 when I moved to the area after completing my PhD in accounting from Cornell University. I am an Associate Professor at UMass Amherst where I teach financial and managerial accounting. My research examines how accounting systems change the way people think about and report on their own performance. I have served as chair on the UMassFive Asset and Liability Management Committee for the past three years, and most recently as Board Secretary. I believe that as a member of the Board I will be able to use my expertise to help the Credit Union continue to grow in a responsible way that benefits its members. I also volunteer as a research foundation director for the Institute of Management Accountants, and in multiple positions with the American Accounting Association, I love the idea of using my accounting knowledge to give back to the community.

Curt Shumway – 3 Year Term (Incumbent)

I have been a member of the Credit Union since 2016 and joined through the Hampshire Hospitality sponsor group. I graduated from the University of New Hampshire and spent the next 12 years in mortgage lending with Shawmut Bank, Bank of Boston, and Provident Financial. For the past 30 years, I have been running my family's real estate development business which includes building and managing several local hotels, office buildings, and multi-family residences. In 2018, I was recognized as the Citizen of the Year for my professional and charitable contributions to the region by the Amherst Area Chamber of Commerce. I have been volunteering on the Credit Union’s Board since 2019, including serving on the Asset and Liability Management Committee, as well as the Credit Risk Management Committee and Human Resources Committee.

Peter Rosskothen – 3 Year Term (Incumbent)

I joined UMassFive through leveraging the Credit Union’s Commercial Banking services for my business endeavors five years ago. I studied finance at The Universidad de los Andes (Bogotá – Colombia) and Hotel & Restaurant Management at UMass Amherst. With over 35 years of experience running my own business, I am skilled in organization finance and budgeting, as well as branding, marketing, strategic planning, and community relations. In the past, I have volunteered as a Board member at numerous organizations – People’s Savings Bank, Holyoke Chamber of Commerce, and the Greater Springfield Visitors and Convention Bureau, to name a few. I would enjoy contributing this sum of my life experiences to the ongoing success of UMassFive and its members as a financial cooperative. I find it rewarding to participate in a process that will make UMassFive a better institution, while also supporting its members and their endeavors. After all, giving back to the community is a way of saying thank you.
